Calculating the emissions of an entire FRIEDRICH SCHARR KG product line using a PCF calculation matrix opens up new possibilities for continuous product optimization and early comparison of emission differences between different formulations.

Challenges of the customer

FRIEDRICH SCHARR KG commissioned us to calculate product footprints and develop a customized calculator for HYPEROL® lubricants. This will enable SCHARR to continuously optimize products and draw comparisons between the emission differences of different formulations at an early stage.

Our solution approach

In the first step on the way to the finished calculator, we identified all product-relevant energy and material flows, transportation and processes along the value chain. We then calculated the product footprints of the three basic components of the product line: base oil reraffinate, base oil first raffinate and additive packages. On this basis, we developed the Excel-based calculator, including an intuitive user interface that allows selection from several system limits and a flexible combination of various parameters. For easy communication of the results, we also developed an automatic results display that provides SCHARR and its customers with a clear overview.

The result
of this success story

With the calculator, SCHARR can precisely calculate and automatically display the specific CO₂e footprints of your HYPEROL® lubricants. In the data entry mask, you can freely choose between all stored raw materials in order to flexibly design formulations. For example, it is possible to include re-refining agents in different proportions or the use of different additives in the calculation. Depending on requirements, SCHARR can choose between various system limits of different balancing standards in the calculator, including the industry-specific PCF standard of the lubricant associations UEIL and ATIEL. All this allows flexible use of the calculator and supports the emission-optimized further development of the products. In order to ensure that the results are up to date and to react to changes in the market, Fokus Zukunft provides continuous support and annual updates of the emission factors.
