Customer challenges

SPORTLER AG is a co-founder of the Outdoor Retailer Climate Commitment (ORCC), a voluntary association of European outdoor retailers who are convinced that climate change is one of the key challenges of our time. The members are committed to contributing to limiting global warming to 1.5°C, measuring their corporate carbon footprint (CCF) annually and pursuing science-based reduction targets. For this reason, SPORTLER has decided to join the SBTi and commission Fokus Zukunft for support.

Our solution approach

As a basis for joining SBTi, it was necessary to record and balance emissions along the entire value chain in accordance with the Value Chain Standard and GHG Protocol. Together with SPORTLER, we created this total carbon footprint (CCF), including determining relevant Scope 3 categories. The client provided extensive data that was necessary for the calculation of the corporate footprint.

After completing this assessment, we accompanied SPORTLER through three central phases of the SBTi process:

Phase 1

Commitment and initial target commitment:

The first step was to fill in the commitment letter together. This document commits the company to developing concrete reduction targets.

Phase 2

Development of the reduction targets:

Together with the company, we decided which near-term, long-term or net-zero targets should be set and whether specific sectoral guidelines should be taken into account. Together, we developed the reduction targets for Scope 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with SBTi specifications. This required close coordination in order to identify the potential for reducing emissions within the company. The final targets were then submitted to SBTi.

Phase 3

Support in the validation phase:

Once the objectives had been defined, they were validated by the SBTi. We were on hand to advise athletes in the event of queries and formal requirements from the SBTi regarding the objectives.

The result
of this success story

Thanks to a structured and close collaboration, SPORTLER was successfully accepted into the SBTi. The company has set clear, science-based targets to significantly reduce its CO₂e emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3. With this, SPORTLER AG has established a solid foundation to reduce its carbon footprint in the long term and make a positive contribution to climate protection.

Goals to which
SPORTLER AG is committed

SPORTLER AG commits to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 47% by 2030, using 2022 as the base year. In addition, by 2028, 82% of their suppliers, measured by spending on purchased goods and services, are expected to have set science-based targets. Furthermore, the company aims to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products (fossil fuels) by 33.6% by 2028, also using 2022 as the base year.

By 2045, SPORTLER aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% (base year: 2022). The company also commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products (fossil fuels) by 90% within the same timeframe. All remaining absolute Scope 3 emissions are also to be significantly reduced.

SPORTLER AG is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2045.

“Fokus Zukunft played a key role in helping us define our science-based climate targets and guided us competently and reliably through the entire accreditation process.
