Customer challenges

At Landgard Obst & Gemüse GmbH & Co. KG, sustainability is a central component of the company’s strategic direction as a producer cooperative. The careful use of natural resources and a sense of responsibility toward nature are firmly embedded in the company’s values.

Against this backdrop, Landgard set itself the goal of establishing ambitious, science-based reduction targets and having them validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in order to make a measurable contribution to meeting the 1.5°C target.
Given the company’s complex structure and extensive national and international trade volume of over 500,000 tons of fruits and vegetables (2022), this step presented a particular challenge. To manage this demanding process strategically and efficiently, the client decided to collaborate with Fokus Zukunft.

Our solution approach

The basis for the SBTi target validation was the comprehensive capture and accounting of emissions across the entire value chain in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Since a significant portion of Landgard’s emissions falls under the FLAG (Forest, Land, and Agriculture) category due to its trade in agricultural products, the requirements of the FLAG Guidance were also taken into account in the accounting process. This guidance, published by the SBTi in 2023, contains specific accounting requirements for emissions from land use and agriculture.

Based on this, we jointly developed the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) and implemented all methodological requirements. This included identifying relevant Scope 3 categories as well as the correct FLAG classification of emissions. Landgard provided extensive data for this purpose, including information on quantities, origin, and cultivation methods of purchased and produced goods, as well as on transport routes and modes, which enabled transparent and robust accounting.

After completing this assessment, we accompanied Landgard through three central phases of the SBTi process:

Phase 1

Commitment and initial target commitment:

The first step was to fill in the commitment letter together. This document commits Landgard to developing concrete reduction targets.

Phase 2

Development of the reduction targets:

Together with the company, we decided which SBTi targets to set. We worked together to develop reduction targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 (Energy & Industry and FLAG) in accordance with SBTi guidelines. This required close coordination to identify opportunities for emissions reductions within the company. The final targets were then submitted to SBTi.

Phase 3

Support in the validation phase:

Once the targets had been defined, they were validated by the SBTi. We provided advisory support to Landgard Obst & Gemüse GmbH & Co. KG regarding methodological questions and the SBTi’s formal requirements concerning the emissions inventory and the targets.

The result
of this success story

Landgard and Fokus Zukunft successfully completed the project with an SBTi target validation. The company now has science-based reduction targets that provide a clear foundation for its climate strategy. Building on this, Landgard can now move forward with implementing reduction measures and thereby make a measurable contribution to climate protection in line with the 1.5°C target.
